Caller ID can be forged much the same way as email headers. I wouldn't trust calls even with callerID.

I honestly don't know why the banks can't just use email like normal people, in the event that someone did try and impersonate the bank any reply would just go to the bank. (Unless you're one of those Douches who doesn't check recipient before sending).

For the extra paranoid there is even the possibility of cryptographically signing emails for improved authenticity. Something you cannot do with either the phone nor postal mail.
